YACHTING: Hermione, sailing towards America

Eighteen years have passed since the opening of the construction sites in Rochefort and the famous frigate of the Marquis de La Fayette is ready to sail again towards America.

Since 1997, four million visitors have already seen the rebirth of the beautiful three-masted sailing ship that, in 1780, had led the secessionist La Fayette in America. Strong of its 65 meters from bow to stern, the Hermione, rebuilt according to the original plans of the engineer Chevillard Aîné, leaves for a circumnavigation of 7500 miles. The dream of some people interested in history and sea has become a reality thanks to the efforts of the volunteers of Hermione-La Fayette Association and Friends of Hermione foundation in America.

Led by Commander Yann Cariou, who has already led the Belem over the oceans, 79 crew members, both volunteers and professionals, board the sailing ship for a four-month adventure through the history. Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and nine other cities along the East Coast are preparing to celebrate the arrival of the French sailors. In each call, the program includes Exhibitions and Franco-Americans meetings, while the ships of Tall Ships America are already looking forward to join the Hermione to perform outstanding parades.

The journey of Hermione, symbol of Franco-American friendship, promises to be full of emotions as well as its return to Rochefort, in August 2015.
