"Excluded from the SCE, under subparagraph g) of paragraph 2 of article 18 of Decree-Law nº101-D/2020, of December 7." -Ave region, belonging to the Minho region and the district of Braga.

It is the seat of the Municipality of Guimarães, which has a total area of 240.95 km2, 156,830 inhabitants in 2021 and a population density of 651 inhabitants per km2, subdivided into 48 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso, to the east by Fafe, to the south by Felgueiras, Vizela and Santo Tirso, to the west by Vila Nova de Famalicão and to the northwest by Braga.

It is a historic city, with a crucial role in the formation of Portugal, and which has been around for more than a millennium since its formation, when it was known as Vimaranes. This toponym may have originated in Vímara Peres, in the middle of the 9th century, when he made this place his main governing center for the Portucalense county that he had conquered for the Kingdom of Asturias.

Guimarães is one of the most important historic cities in the country, with its historic center inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2001, which definitely makes it one of the largest tourist centers in the region. Its streets and monuments breathe history and enchant those who visit.

Today's Guimarães has managed to best reconcile history and the consequent maintenance of heritage with the dynamism and entrepreneurship that characterize modern cities, which are expressed in the nomination for European Capital of Culture in 2012, factors that led Guimarães to be chosen by the New York Times as one of the 41 places to visit in 2011 and to consider it one of the emerging cultural points of the Iberian Peninsula. It was also European City of Sports (CED) in 2013. In the latter, Guimarães was distinguished as being the best CED of 2013.

Guimarães is often referred to as the "Cradle City", due to the fact that it has The administrative center of the Portucalense County was established by D. Henrique and his son D. Afonso Henriques could have been born in this city and fundamentally due to the historical importance that the Battle of São Mamede, fought on the outskirts of the city on June 24, 1128, had for the formation of nationality. However, the needs of the Reconquista and protection of territories to the south took this same center to Coimbra in 1129.

The region in which Guimarães is located has been a permanent settlement since at least the national Final Chalcolithic, as attested the presence, in the municipality, of the towns of Briteiros and Sabroso or the Penha archaeological station.

From the founding of Guimarães to the founding of Portugal

After the political action of reconquest organized by the Kingdom of Asturias, with the intervention of the nobleman Vímara Peres in the remote 9th century , the medieval foundation of the current city has its roots in the remote 10th century. It was at this time that Countess Mumadona Dias, widow of Hermenegildo Gonçalves, ordered the construction, on her Vimaranes property, of a double monastery, which became a center of attraction and gave rise to the settlement of a population group known as Vila Baixa. At the same time and to defend the cluster, she ordered the construction of a castle a short distance away, on the hill, thus creating a second anchorage point in the upper town. Connecting the two centers, Rua de Santa Maria was formed.

Subsequently, the Monastery became a Royal Collegiate Church and acquired great importance due to the privileges and donations that kings and nobles granted it. It became a famous Pilgrimage Sanctuary, and believers flocked from everywhere with prayers and promises.

The granting, by Count D. Henrique, of the first national charter (considered by some historians to be prior to that of Constantim of Panóias), on an unknown date, but possibly in 1096, attests to the growing importance of the then town of Guimarães, chosen as the capital of the then Portucalense County.

Here it would take place, on the 24th of June of 1128, the Battle of São Mamede.

Modern and Contemporary Age

As the town expanded and organized, it was surrounded partially by a defensive wall in the reign of D. Dinis. Meanwhile, mendicant orders settled in Guimarães and helped shape the city's appearance. Subsequently, the two poles merge into a single one and after the demolition of the wall that separated the two population centers during the reign of D. João I, the town within the walls changed little, expanding outside the walls with the creation of new streets.
