Description
A very clear village with a very healthy climate and lots of water. It is approximately 9 km from Sitia and reached via a street that branches off from the Sitia - Palkastro street to Tripitos. Since it is not mentioned in the Venetian census of 1583, the village seems to have been founded at a later date. The etymology of the name is uncertain, although some believe that it must come from the flowing water that can be seen under the old village church of Ayios Nikoaos (Reousa: Fluent, Plus - Eklisia: Church). ? I think it is more likely that the reddish color of the earth in the area (Rousso: red) in connection with the existence of the Church of the original settlement caused the name. Near the “Tou Timiou Stavrou” church (the true cross), a shrine was discovered in a place called Anixi, which produced many finds from the archaic period - such as: B. clay tablets in flat relief, lamps and various other vessels. Other ancient finds came from Kato Lagokfalo - the location of a settlement from the archaic period - and from Kastri, where the remains of a paved city are with a tower. In the village there is a fountain, which, according to his inscription in 1877, was built by Axelos, the then governor of the province of Lassithi. In 1897, a conference of personalities and members of the Revolutionary Council took place in the village to write a petition to the Russian vice consul in Heraklion. The theory that Roussa Ekklisia was built by the former residents of Trapezunda after this city was destroyed by Khair Ed-Din Barbarossa is unpaid. This community also includes the hamlets of Koutsoulopetres and Koskinas as well as the Yioupes cave.
