Description
Matala is a village 75 km southwest of Heraklion in Crete, Greece. The artificial caves in the cliffs of Matala Bay were created in the Neolithic period. Matala was the port of Phaistos during the Minoan period. Matala was then a fishing village. In the 1960s the caves were occupied by hippies who were later driven out by the church and the military junta. Now Matala is a small village that lives mainly from tourism. Matala's hippie history is relived during the three-day Matala Beach Festival. https://youtu.be/aXrGunMYO3M?si=rmXmmf9gFo4V0NI0 Matala – Heraklion – Crete – from above – 4K drone video
