Description
An old building of 300 square meters with distinctive architecture, situated on a plot with a total area of 1, 000 square meters in Maroula, Rethymno. It is an olive oil mill/factory, with architectural features dating it to the 17th and 18th centuries. The building is situated at the highest point of the western part of the village and, together with the tower located right next to it, forms a very distinctive architectural ensemble. Property details: To the east, the building adjoins the tower—an architectural gem of the region, now owned by the Municipality of Rethymno—from which it is separated by a 1.5-meter-wide passageway. Prior to the exchange, the tower had served as the residence of a prominent Muslim family that owned extensive property in Rethymno at that time. To the north, south, and west, the building is surrounded by a community road. On the north side, there is a large courtyard surrounded by a wall built of rough-hewn stones, with a north entrance featuring an arched doorway. South of the enclosure lies the olive press, which has two entrances—one on the north side and one on the east. Inside, the oil press is divided by three rows of arches into four spaces, each of which had a loft in its southern section and was covered by a roof, as evidenced by the few surviving beams. Inside the oil mill, two mechanisms for grinding the olives have been preserved. In the western section, there are two auxiliary rooms—each with its own entrance facing the interior of the oil mill. Information about the area: The village and the region’s natural landscape of unparalleled beauty are ideal for nature lovers seeking a peaceful stay, free from a hectic and fast-paced lifestyle, in an exceptionally picturesque and beautiful area. Maroulas is a village and the seat of the community of the same name within the Municipality of Rethymno. It is located 10 kilometers southeast of the city and is built on top of a hill, at an elevation of 240 meters. It is a traditional village, designated as a protected and traditional settlement where the Venetian character is strongly preserved. According to tradition, the village took its name from a shepherdess named Marouli, who, while grazing her sheep in the area, discovered a spring with refreshing, cool water. This spring has existed in the village since the Venetian period. Most of the buildings date back to the Venetian period, but it is thought that the area may have been inhabited as far back as the Minoan period. During the Venetian period, two towers were built that still stand today, along with other buildings featuring battlements; various coats of arms can be seen on the exterior doors of the buildings. Visitors can also see the olive press, the large arched doors of the Venetian mansions, the narrow alleys, and the arches. Another attraction is the Church of the Prophet Elias at the top of the hill, from where one can see the traditional settlement and the Cretan Sea from above, as well as the Marouli Spring at the bottom of the gorge.
