In traditional architecture, the compositional logic arises from an additive approach in which buildings line up next to each other and gradually merge into a “multicellular organism” – a settlement. In the landscape, however, one rarely encounters isolated residential buildings, especially not in a vertical form; only churches and windmills break the horizon in this way. The main interventions in the landscape concern grain or livestock storage as well as technical structures, which usually spread horizontally and define boundaries. Retaining walls, such as those found in technical buildings, as well as light shading structures, which are typical of anonymous architecture, served as central conceptual tools in the design. The orientation of the walls towards the view represents the first symbolic and abstract gesture - the creation of an artificial boundary and the visible sign of human intervention. Along the course of the site, the walls “roll” towards the view and frame it. The three residences are positioned to follow the curve of the terrain, opening up to the view and extending downward in an organic progression. The architectural development of Residences A and C is topographical: exposed concrete walls emerge as traces in the landscape and transform into retaining walls that define the interior spaces as well as the outdoor areas with a light shading network. The spatial composition is symbolically represented by the upside down Greek letter “PI” – a “vessel of life”. Residence B rises at the bottom of the hill; two parallel walls rise from the ground at an angle. An artificial rock is created that leans towards the view - a reminiscence of the local goats that stand on the slopes. The result is highlighted by the intense Greek light and merges with the landscape to form a uniform structure of living and nature, characterized by clear character traits and harmonized spaces. The arrangement of the openings gives the impression of a spiritual retreat that offers plenty of light, pleasant cooling and a close connection to the surrounding nature. Nature unfolds in front of the user, along the imaginary path of light. A unique play of light and shadow is created, which always offers new experiences throughout the day - depending on the position and intensity of the sun.
