Description
Pitsidia is a small village not far from Matala and the south coast of Crete. As Matala became more and more touristy in the 70s and 80s, many of the hippies and long-term holidaymakers moved to Pitsidia. A tourist infrastructure quickly emerged here in the form of room rentals and taverns. Today Pitsidia is very popular with alternative holidaymakers, especially from Germany. In Pitsida you will find an original Cretan village with an intact structure, farms and country life. Since Pitsidia's visitors are usually not rich, it is considered one of the cheapest tourist places in Crete. The accommodation and restaurants are mostly of good quality and the villagers are remarkably friendly. The area around Pitsidia is also ideal for hiking. For example, hikes to the mountain villages of Sivas, Listaros and Petrokefali are interesting. Beaches south of Matala such as the nudist Red Beach are also popular destinations among hikers in Pitsidia. There are hardly any signposts or markings.
