The village of Platanias is located about 11 km west of Chania. It is a purely tourist resort located on a highly organised sandy beach. The history of Platanias dates back to the late Minoan period, in fact the archaeologists have found ruins of residences and tombs that demonstrate the existence and the development of this settlement from the 13th to the 4th century BC. Platanias is also mentioned in mythology, when the goddess Athena visited Crete, she drank only water from a spring located in Ano Platanias. During the summer Platanias is the busiest areas of Chania. To the west and east of the center lies the sandy beach of Platanias which is about 1,5 kilometers in length. There is a regular bus service that connects Platanias to Chania.
