Description
The village of Sivas, 60 km from Heraklion, is located in the south of Crete. A picturesque little traditional village on the Mediterranean, listed by the Ministry of Culture, with wonderful stone houses with many carved coats of arms, beautiful arched doors and a tradition of organic cultivation of olives (mainly) and other products of the highest quality. Birthplace of the prose writer Themos Kornaros. The village is located 60 kilometers southwest of Heraklion, on the way to Matala and has around 400 inhabitants. At the entrance to the village, Sia first encounters a beautiful and characteristic spring, right next to the church of Agia Marina (holiday is July 17th). A walk along the village square, where you will come across the old and dominant building of the elementary school, which was built in 1864, and an aromatic coffee in a traditional café afterwards will be worthwhile. Next to the elementary school, also built in 1864, you will find the church of Agios Ioannis, dedicated to the memory of the beheading of John the Baptist (holiday is August 29th). The church features a beautiful carved wooden cross and charming icons by the well-known saint icon painter Ioannis Stathakis.
