PORT GRIMAUD: Stopover in the Provence’s Venice

Because Italy does not have the monopoly of lacustrine wonders, if you are travelling near Saint-Tropez do not hesitate to stop in Port Grimaud, a village on the water imagined by François Spoerry.

If Port-Grimaud is so special, it is because 50 years ago the tourist village we know did not yet exist. Born from the imagination of the architect François Spoerry, the village who was renamed "Provençal Venice" is a dream come true for lovers of the sea who already see themselves owners of a beautiful waterfront property.

Famous for his achievements in Porto-Cervo (Sardinia- Italy), in Mulhouse (Tour de l' Europe), in Mexico, in Louisiana... François Spoerry acquired marshland near the medieval village of Grimaud in 1962. Five years later, the first houses of Port Grimaud were built. Completed in the early 2000s, the village on the water immediately obtained the "Heritage of the 20th century" label.

Although entirely private, Port Grimaud welcomes every year thousands of tourists who are curious to discover this exceptional Provençal exception. Covering 75 hectares, the region's most traditional modern village is made up of 2400 houses, 2000 boat places and 7 km of canals. Small restaurants and colourful facades echoing Venice’s sister Burano adorn some 14 kms of quays.

The discovery of the village goes through a boat ride around the islets of Grimaud. However, the visit is complete only after having strolled between the market’s stands of the Place des Artisans and contemplated the Vasarely’s stained-glass windows in the church of St Francis of Assisi. The ancestral village of Grimaud, which dominates the harbour from the hillside, also deserves a visit. It offers a beautiful walk through the perfumes of Provence, discovering the Pont des Fées, the windmill of Saint-Roch and the castle overlooking the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.
